Interviewing Prentice Penny about Black Twitter on Hulu

In May 2024, I had the pleasure of interviewing Prentice Penny about Black Twitter and the new Hulu documentary on the digital cultural experience, “Black Twitter: A People’s History.”

As a Black television and social media clapback legend, Prentice was influential to my entertainment writer and development journey, so the opportunity to test his knowledge of Black Twitter, acronyms, and more in a quick game of Culture Tags was beyond joyful. You know his showrunning, writing and directing work on Girlfriends, Uncorked, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Insecure, and now Black Twitter: A People’s History.

Hearing Prentice’s perspective on iconic moments was both enlightening and nostalgic — a reminder of the power and unity within our digital spaces. Thank you to Meta and We the Culture for organizing this must-see duo moment! I joined Twitter in 2009 and loved re-living the early days with Prentice! We gotta preserve our presences.

Watch “Black Twitter” on Hulu for an exploration of one of the most influential corners of the internet. It brings out our fave moments on the timeline as well as memes in the flesh, in a way that only Prentice could curate.
