Episode 40 – My Conversation with Lexi B
Being a guest on Episode 40 of Lexi B’s show was such a refreshing and affirming experience. We covered so much ground from my Nigerian roots to the realities of being a creative in today’s entertainment industry and I left feeling even more passionate about the work I do.
As a Nigerian-American creative executive, voice actor, and comedian, my heritage is at the core of who I am. My family’s influence runs deep, shaping not just my identity but how I approach my career. I’m lucky enough to have both my mom and dad nearby, which keeps me grounded even when the industry tries to pull me in a hundred directions.
Lexi and I started our conversation with something I love most humor. For me, humor isn’t just entertainment; it’s healing. I enjoy taking ordinary scenarios and giving them a unique twist, finding ways to make people laugh and connect. That joy and lightness is what’s carried me through challenging moments.
But we didn’t shy away from the hard truths. Being in entertainment means you have to advocate for yourself, fiercely. Financial equity, fair treatment, comfortable working conditions these aren’t “nice-to-haves,” they’re essential. We talked about how even high-profile actors like Taraji P. Henson have opened up about the financial realities of this business, and why residuals, proper compensation, and knowing your worth matter so much.
One topic I’m deeply passionate about is protecting actors’ rights in the face of advancing AI technologies. I believe in natural performance, but if my likeness is ever digitally replicated, it should be on my terms with my consent and fair compensation. We can’t allow technology to outpace protections for our work and our image.
At the heart of it all, I believe “to be a public entertainer requires harnessing that childlike belief about yourself.” And if you love yourself enough, you can navigate this industry with more ease.
