I can’t seem to stay away from black-led awards shows, and I’m not mad at all! On February 10th 2016, the African American Film Critics Association brought many of the powerful and friendly faces from the #ImageAwards back for a night of celebration and recognition.
Among those honored were John Singleton, Ryan Coogler and marketing powerhouse Jeff Clanagan. As the LA Times shared today:
“Clanagan’s words, while accepting the Ashley Boone award for his work in marketing and distribution, received much applause for its direct approach to addressing ways black Hollywood can respond to the broader industry’s lack of diversity.”
“This notion [that] our movies don’t travel overseas is [expletive],” he said. “There are audiences over there and they want to see us, [so much so that] they get it on bootleg.”
I appreciated the #AAFCA7’s unique approach to honoring influential black people in the entertainment industry, nodding to several change-makers who typically go unnoticed by mainstream awards shows. As you can see from my video, the night was full of special moments! You can check out my red carpet and ceremony photos here:
Gotta love Hollywood and creating content for its best and brightest!
